Project Goal

Provide education - research and clinical implications - for medical, nursing, education, and other professional audiences in Pennsylvania on pediatric overweight and obesity with the overall goal of decreasing overweight and obesity and improving family wellness.

Promotional Methods

Direct marketing to pediatric and family medicine physicians and practices, professional organizations, hospital and other health systems, insurers, educational systems, nurse-family partnerships, WIC and SNAP staff, child care, and other audiences that might benefit from hosting an EPIC® Pediatric Obesity: Evaluation, Treatment and Prevention in Community Settings program. Program are provided live, on-site and via webinar. In addition, webinars going more in depth on obesity-related topics are offered periodically. All programs and webinars are provided at no charge to participants and provide CME/CEU credits. In addition, program staff participate in health alliances and coalitions.

Project Challenges

Challenge: overweight and obesity are complex issues that include the larger society, media, culture, physical health, mental health, genetics, community safety, screen time, availability of green space, nutrition, diet, beverages and many other factors. On the other hand, this very complexity offers multiple areas for intervention. Motivational interviewing is an important and effective technique to help an individual, family, community, or school determine where they want to start to address the issues.

Project Results

Program evaluation includes pre- and post-tests at the time of the program, comments and feedback from participants and presenters, online surveys, and follow-up phone calls. Participants find the programs and handouts useful and relevant, the presenters to be helpful and open, and implement changes as a result of participating in the Program. The information gained from the evaluation process is used by Program staff for ongoing quality improvement.
