Bicycle Safety

Bicycle safety is the practice of reducing ones risk associated with cycling.  Bicycle safety can be practiced by wearing a helmet, staying visible by wearing light clothes or reflective gear and following the rules of the road.

Communities can have a large impact on bicycle safety as well by providing education opportunities on safety and access to safe places to ride.  Here are some ways a community can help:

  • Organize a bicycle safety night for families
  • Organize a bicycle helmet program providing free or discounted helmets for kids and adults.  Proper fit and use should be part of the program
  • Create or clean up an existing bicycle path and promote bicycle safety through the event
  • Implement bike lanes on roads for bicyclists to use
  • Work with local law enforcement to encourage the enforcement of bicycle traffic laws
